SEO copywriting: how to brief a writer in the UK
SEO copywriting in the UK starts with a useful brief: set queries, reader, page goal, scope, British style and compliance, then agree checks after launch.
What to take away
- A usable brief names the queries, the reader and the single action the page must drive.
- Say up front whether keyword research is part of the job, and who approves the final list.
- Set British spelling, sector compliance rules and revision rounds in writing before drafting starts.
- Book a review date six to eight weeks after publication, using Search Console data rather than opinion.
Give the writer the queries, not just a word count
Good SEO copywriting starts with the query, reader and action, not the word count. A request for 1,200 words on commercial heating tells a writer almost nothing. The same page briefed with eight buying queries, a reader profile and a quote form to feed will read better and rank for terms your buyers type.
Intent changes page structure

Search intent drives structure. A page for people comparing installers needs prices and lead times near the top, while a guide for early research can open with definitions. Ask the writer to run UK keyword research if you have none, and ask to see the query-to-page map before drafting. That map stops two pages competing for the same phrase.
Set the success measure before you commission
Before you commission anything, agree what success looks like. For a new service page that may mean impressions and query coverage in the first quarter, with enquiries as the later measure. If you want sector context before you set a target, the ONS publishes regular output data for business services that is free to use.
What a brief must contain
Use this checklist as the minimum. Send it with the commission, not after the first draft arrives.
- Queries to target, grouped by intent, and a query-to-page map.
- The intended reader, the page’s single action, its target URL and page title.
- The evidence the writer may use, plus anything that needs approval before publication.
- Scopepages, revision rounds, delivery dates, and whether keyword research and meta titles and descriptions are included.
- The success measure, British spelling and style rules, sector compliance requirements, and the review date.
| Brief item | What to hand over | Effect on search performance |
|---|
Minimum brief contents
- Target queries, five to fifteen per page
- Reader and intent
- Page job and one action
- Proof points and certifications
- Internal links with anchor wording
- Compliance wording and sign-off route
Work through the brief in five steps
A repeatable sequence saves arguments later.
Five steps to brief a writer
- Collect queries and group by intent
- Assign one page per intent
- List proof and flag approvals
- Agree scope in writing
- Book review date and success evidence
- Collect queries from Search Console, site search and sales calls, then group them by intent.
- Assign one page to each intent and write the target URL and page title into the brief.
- List the proof the writer may use and flag anything that needs approval before publication.
- Agree scope in writingpages, revision rounds, delivery dates, and whether meta titles and descriptions are included.
- Book the review date and decide which evidence will count as success.
Check the sample before you commit
Ask for a short paid sample on one query rather than a free test across your site. Search engine copywriting is not a separate craft from good sales copy, it just starts from the query. A strong sample answers that query in the first two sentences and uses headings that match how people search.
When you interview an SEO web copywriter UK-side, ask why each heading is worded as it is. A UK SEO content writer should be able to explain the query behind it. Rates differ between freelancers and studios, and our guide to UK copywriting rates per word sets out what drives the gap.
Get British spelling, claims and consent wording right
Put the style rules in the brief: -ise endings, colour, licence as a noun, and dates written as 3 March 2026. Ask for the copy in a shared document so headings, meta title and meta description can be checked before publication.
Claims about results, comparisons or savings fall under the CAP Code that the ASA publishes, so give the writer the evidence behind each one. If a landing page collects personal data, the consent wording has to line up with your privacy notice, and the ICO's UK GDPR guidance explains what that involves.
Common questions
Should the writer do the keyword research?
Some will, some will not, so ask before you commission. Expect a separate fee when research is included, because it produces its own deliverable. If you already have a query list from Search Console, send it with the brief.
How long should an SEO page be?
Length follows the query and the competition rather than a round number. A service page that answers a buying question can work at 700 words, while a comparison page may need twice that. Ask the writer to propose a length and a heading outline before drafting.
Can I write the brief myself?
Yes, and a written brief usually produces better copy than a kick-off call on its own. Our guide to how to write a copywriting brief UK teams can reuse sets out the sections to include.
What should I check after publication?
Compare impressions, clicks and the queries that triggered the page against your brief. If a query you wanted is still missing after six to eight weeks, brief a revision of that section rather than rewriting the whole page.
